What is pain management?

Pain management uses many medical disciplines to methodically study pain, its prevention, diagnosis and treatment, as well as the rehabilitation of painful disorders.

Pain management is important because pain that goes untreated can inhibit the healing process. In cases of back pain, discomfort can hinder your rehabilitation by interfering with exercise and causing psychological distress. To learn more about pain and pain management, watch our Pain Management Education videos.

We use a variety of pain treatment options to manage a range of different types of pain. To learn more about your options, visit our Pain Conditions and Treatment page.

What’s the difference between acute and chronic pain?

Acute pain starts quickly, and in most cases, can be relieved in less than 6 weeks. It is the most common type of back pain, and could be caused by things like falling, being tackled or lifting something heavy. Chronic pain is persistent pain that lasts longer than six months, even after an injury has been healed.

What’s the difference between nociceptive pain and neuropathic pain?

Nociceptive pain is caused by damage to body tissue and usually described as a sharp, aching, or throbbing pain. While, neuropathic pain occurs when there is actual nerve damage and is often described as a burning or heavy sensation, or numbness along the path of the affected nerve.

What type of injections do you perform?

We perform a range of injections to relieve pain. For a full list of our services and how we treat pain, visit our Pain Conditions and Treatment page.
